In a ground-breaking initiative to enhance internet connectivity across all major parks, reserves, sanctuaries, and stations, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has invested in satellite connectivity aimed at improving efficiency and customer experience, particularly in remote areas.

In an agreement entered between KWS and Karibu Connect, the local Starlink service provider, the latter will oversee the supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of satellite internet connectivity in over 70 revenue gates and stations across the country.

The collaboration was facilitated through the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology. It will ensure seamless internet and WI-FI access for both staff and visitors.

Past data points that most users have struggled with mobile communication and lacked fibre optic connections, posing challenges for customers who rely on the eCitizen ticketing system for payments, especially in remote parks like Aberdares, Sibiloi, and Mt. Kenya. The new satellite connectivity is expected to resolve these challenges, providing reliable internet access, enhancing revenue collection, and improving the overall staff and visitor experience.

Additionally, it will help mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, facilitate ecological monitoring, and enhance security operations. According to KWS Director, Dr. Frustus Kanga, KWS will provide free Wi-Fi in major visitor touch-points to ensure customers have a memorable experience and feel safe in all KWS facilities.

So far 40 parks, stations, and offices, including Tsavo, Aberdares, Isiolo and Ndere Island have been fully equipped with this advanced connectivity.
