Lake Turkana Parks Set for Conservation Restoration - Private Safaris East Africa

Lake Turkana Parks Set for Conservation Restoration:

Restoring Nature, Reviving Wildlife, Reconnecting Communities.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has partnered with Archipelagus, an East African conservation non-profit foundation to strengthen ecosystem management and support the restoration of Sibiloi and Central Island National Parks, which form part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lake Turkana National Parks.

The initiative will focus on improving park security, strengthening land-use management and creating employment opportunities for local communities.
Planned measures include new ranger facilities, improved monitoring systems and the eventual reintroduction of wildlife species such as reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, plains zebras and Somali ostriches. Black rhino reintroduction is part of the longer-term vision.

The programme also envisages carefully managed nature-based tourism, improved water access and community-led fisheries management, linking conservation with local livelihoods.
The initiative comes as Lake Turkana National Parks remain on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites in Danger, highlighting the importance of sustained efforts to protect the region’s unique natural heritage.
