Know Your Destination: Malka Mari National Park.
A Unique Water Catchment in Kenya’s Far Northeast | 18th August 2026.
Nestled along the Daua River on the Kenya–Ethiopia border, Malka Mari National Park is a remote and remarkably unspoilt wilderness in Mandera County. Gazetted in 1989, the 876 km² park is characterized by semi-arid bushland, scrubby grasslands, riparian woodlands and palms.
The Daua River provides a vital water catchment and dry-season refuge for wildlife, supporting diverse ecosystems and aquatic species. Visitors may encounter reticulated giraffes, oryx, lesser and greater kudu, impalas, Thomson’s gazelles and waterbuck, alongside predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackals and African wild dogs. The river is also home to hippos, crocodiles and fish.

The day’s exercise was both humbling and rewarding. Participants ventured into the swampy creek, carefully navigating the deep, black mud while carrying and planting young mangrove seedlings. With trousers rolled up and feet sinking into the soft ground, each step demanded balance and determination. Working together, the team firmly secured each seedling into the muddy soil – embracing the challenge, despite the inevitable mud-covered hands and boots.
What began as a physically demanding activity soon became a powerful reminder that meaningful conservation often requires stepping beyond our comfort zones.
Mangrove forests are among the world’s most valuable coastal ecosystems. They serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion and storm surges, provide essential breeding grounds for fish and other marine life, improve water quality, and capture significant amounts of atmospheric carbon, making them powerful allies in the fight against climate change.
Beyond their ecological importance, mangrove restoration projects create lasting social impact by supporting local livelihoods, strengthening community resilience, and empowering women through sustainable conservation initiatives.
This event was more than a tree planting exercise. It was a celebration of collective action and environmental responsibility. Every seedling planted represents a lasting investment in healthier coastlines, thriving biodiversity, and a more sustainable future.
At Private Safaris, we believe that every journey into nature carries a responsibility to protect it. Through initiatives such as this, we remain committed to ensuring that the landscapes and ecosystems that inspire travellers today continue to flourish for generations to come.
