Nairobi Flyways Declaration

A new Nairobi Flyways Declaration is calling for coordinated international action to protect the habitats and migration routes that sustain migratory birds across continents.Unveiled during the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi, the declaration brings together conservation organisations, scientists, governments and financial institutions around a shared goal, protecting the interconnected wetlands, forests, grasslands and coastal habitats that migratory birds depend on throughout their journeys.

The urgency is clear. BirdLife International’s latest State of the World’s Birds report finds that 45% of migratory bird species are declining, while about one in nine faces the threat of extinction.For Kenya, the development has particular significance. The country lies along the African-Eurasian flyway, with millions of birds travelling between breeding grounds in the north and wintering areas in Africa each year. Kenya’s wetlands, forests and other habitats therefore form an important part of this vast international network.
