Mount Kenya National Park is one of Kenya’s most spectacular natural treasures, offering visitors an unforgettable blend of breathtaking scenery, rich wildlife, and adventure. Located just 175 kilometers (108 miles) from Nairobi, the park was established in 1949 to protect the majestic Mount Kenya, its diverse ecosystems, and the vital water catchment areas that supply much of Kenya with fresh water.
Covering approximately 700 square kilometers, the park stretches across dramatic landscapes ranging from dense forests and bamboo zones to open moorlands, crystal-clear mountain rivers, and glacial peaks. Towering above it all is Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, crowned by the striking twin summits of Batian and Nelion. Revered by the Kikuyu people and celebrated worldwide for its unique ecological significance, Mount Kenya is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve.
One of the park’s most remarkable features is the ever-changing scenery as you ascend the mountain. Each altitude reveals a new world of vegetation, from lush forests and bamboo thickets to alpine flora, moorlands, and high-altitude tundra. This extraordinary diversity creates a haven for wildlife and birdlife, with more than 130 bird species recorded within the park.
Beyond its iconic mountain, Mount Kenya National Park is home to pristine wilderness, sparkling lakes and tarns, ancient glaciers, mineral springs, and some of the most stunning landscapes in East Africa. Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation, or a connection with nature, the park offers something for everyone.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities, including mountain climbing, guided nature walks, game viewing, camping under the stars, and exploring fascinating caves. Multiple access points make it easy to explore different sections of the park, including Narumoru Gate, Sirimon Gate, Chogoria Gate, Kamweti Gate, Kihari Gate, and Mawingu Gate.
The nearest airport is located in Nanyuki, while several smaller airstrips serve the exclusive lodges and camps surrounding the mountain, making access both convenient and scenic.
Whether you’re a seasoned climber, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply looking to experience one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring landscapes, Mount Kenya National Park promises an adventure unlike any other.
